Where I Stand on Health Care
Healthcare has become the
single largest expenditure in the State budget.

Healthcare has become the single largest expenditure in the State budget. TN-Care has been the driving force behind the growth of health care expenditure in Tennessee. TN-Care should have taught us that the state can not provide healthcare completely from dollar one. We all must participate in our own healthcare both from a personal care and a financial interest.

Reform is the answer. Some states such as Utah and Florida have implemented a unique approach to providing access to health care for its citizens. These states provide a major medical coverage policy where the first $1000 expended on healthcare is out of the users’ pocket. When this yearly amount is met, then the major medical portion will start paying the medical bills. This type of insurance is made available to those who are uninsurable and is provided for those who qualify.

Medical liability reform is another area that must be addressed. Too many of our OB-GYN and surgeons are leaving the rural area of our State to practice where it is economically feasible to make a living. Texas is a state that has implemented a good and fair medical liability reform which has resulted in more Doctors returning to the rural areas of this State.

Another bill that I am a co-sponsor on is the “age in place” bill. This piece of legislation would re-direct nursing home dollars to help our senior citizens use these same dollars to provide health care benefits while they live at home. The net affect would be a savings for the tax payer and would provide our senior citizens a way to stay at home longer.

Cover Tennessee

“Cover Tennessee” is a generic term to describe several health care insurance programs which the state provides. Cover Tennessee is the insurance program designed to help the person who does not have health care from their employer. Rx Tennessee is a program to help Tennesseans with their pharmacy coverage. Cover Tennessee kids is for all Tennessee children 18 years of age and under, and finally there is Access Tennessee, which is designed for Tennesseans who can not find health care insurance.
